Transition Services

The Brentwood School

The transition services program at The Brentwood School is designed to be a results oriented process, focusing on improving the student’s academic and functional achievement.

The Brentwood School Counseling Department works in collaboration with school districts, students, parents and outside agencies to provide each student with a plan that focuses on the successful transition from high school to post secondary options.. This includes post secondary education, vocational education, integrated employment, continuing and adult education, independent living, or community participation.  The plan is based upon the individual student’s needs, taking into account the student’s strengths, preferences, interests and includes instruction, related services and community experiences. College visitation programs, transition meetings, vocational rehabilitation referrals, senior seminar course, work study opportunities, and weekly counseling to meet IEP transition goals are available to all students.

The Senior Seminar curriculum focuses on life skills and the importance of career development as suggested by the New Hampshire Department of Education Career Development Frameworks. This course aids students in preparing for life after high school. Goal setting, the college application process, career exploration, job search resources, interview techniques, resume writing, budgeting, life planning and time management are all discussed at length and documented in a student centered portfolio. These portfolios are presented by the student at their final transition meeting with Vocational Rehabilitation resources and input.

The Work Study program offers an opportunity for students to earn school credit offsite while reinforcing the importance of personal responsibility and socially appropriate behavior needed to become a productive member of the work force. They demonstrate an ability to develop relationships with employers in the community, learn the necessary skills to meet the requirements of their job as well as the expectations of their employer, and implement time management planning into their daily lives.
