·       English Composition II:

Course Description:

English Composition II is a course designed to introduce students to a variety of genres of literature and formats of writing. Students will learn how to express themselves more efficiently and how to read and respond to literature in an analytical and informed manner. Students will also focus on developing their knowledge of proper grammar and sentence structure.

Guiding Questions:

Why do we tell stories? What lessons do/can stories contain and what steps do we need to take to find these lessons? What role can literature play in our lives as students and as adults? How can literature help us define ourselves? Why is a basic knowledge of the conventions of English so essential to our future success in society today?

·       Writing and Reading Comprehension:

Course Description:

Writing and Reading Comprehension is a course designed to improve students’ reading comprehension and writing skills. Students will focus on developing their knowledge of proper grammar and sentence structure; an act that will improve their ability to break down and understand the written word. To further enhance this latter ability, students will also be introduced to and asked to respond to a variety of short stories. Finally, students will be asked to write a variety of essays to improve their written communication skills.

 

Guiding Questions:

Why is a basic knowledge of the conventions of English so essential to our future success in society today? How can learning how to truly comprehend what we read benefit us now and in the future? Why is it so important to learn how to write effectively? What lessons can we learn about ourselves and others through these mediums?

§  Participation and Effort: (20%)

o    Attendance, discussion, attention, ability to stay on topic, preparation for class, etc.

§  Class work: (50%)

o    Worksheets, readings, short essays, rough drafts, etc.

§  Tests/Projects/Major Essays: (30%)
